The end of the mass production and consumption era suggests the significance of conservation efforts of the global environment, including the saving of resources and energy as well as circulation and reuses of resources, of which measures are under discussion and on the course of realization in different fields. Architectural industry, which is no exception to those efforts, is also addressing means for environmental conservation. For this purpose, statistic data are required as the basic materials to estimate the discarding of existing buildings. At present, such data are insufficient, and they must be promptly enhanced. This study, therefore, discusses the situation of housing stock and its loss as well as the estimated destruction based on the quantity described in municipal "Fixed Assets and Houses Ledger, " considered to be the most reliable data on the stock and eliminated units of residential buildings. he situation of stock and loss of exclusively residential, apartments and multiple-purpose wooden houses and farm houses has been clarified. The general loss rate of wooden houses is about 1.45%, resulting in annual elimination of about 460,000 units. The distribution of house stock by building years has revealed its peak at 14 to 20 use years, while the distribution of house elimination has its peak at 20 to 23 use years. 2. For non-wooden residential houses, the situation of stock and loss of reinforced concrete, steel-frame, and light gauge steel-frame buildings was clarified. The general loss rate is broadly 0.60%, resulting in annual elimination of about 22,000 units. The stock distribution by building years contains chiefly buildings of 18 years or less in age, and the distribution of building elimination has its peak at 16 to 20 use years. 3. The quantity of construction waste from abolished residential houses can be estimated based on the distribution of stock and the number of eliminated units by building years. In addition, the stock of residential buildings in the country consists of buildings of 20 years or less in age, which can contain harmful substances such as chemicals in new building materials, and agricultural chemicals used in preservative agents, whose exhaust can endanger the environment.
