Research Abstract

Hadron identification detector in the particle physics experiment is one of the most important parts to determine the final states of the reactions. Recent distinct improvements in the Aerogel Cherenkov detector enables higher capability in the hadron identification. The major aim of this research is to study control parameters to be monitored in order to establish the way for the stable operation of this newly developed device.
Fine-mesh type of the photo-multiplier (PMT) is a good candidate for the photon detection in this detector since it is robust against magnetic field. We have measured its properties in the magnetic field and found that, although the gain under 1.5T magnetic field is dropped by about 1/ to 1/0 depending on the direction of PMT,the resolution stays constant and further improvement is seen if the supplied voltage is increased.
We have constructed monitoring system using GaN LED which emits light with similar wave length as that of Cherenkov light. By guiding light through optical fibers to the Aerogel Cherenkov counter, we have investigated the stability of the system. The stability of the GaN LED itself is found to be good enough as a light source, namely, within 2% during 40 days running and within 0.5% for the variation of the temperature from 5゚Cto 70゚C.The light distribution is essential for the application of larger scale system. We have studied several sets of the distributors which have one input fiber and 16 output fibers. The optimum performance is obtained for the fiber diameters : 400mum (input) and 100mum (output), where we observe more than 90% uniformity with acceptable light output.
