Research Abstract

The present investigator discovered that living cells emit sonic signal that are responded by both homologous and heterologous cells, and that many natural materials also emit sounds upon electromagnetic radiation such as infrated pulses, some of which would be received by cells functioning in promotion/regulation of growth of the cells. Such phenomena were first found among bacterial cells and subsequently also in higher plants and animals. The investigation involved elucidation of following several kinds of phenomena.
(1) Detection of the production of sonic signals from Bacillus subtilis cells. By use of a sonic coupler (sample room) and a supersensitive microphone-amplifier system for photoacoustic spectrometry, sound waves emitted from ca.50mg of Bacillus subtilis cells were detected and analyzed by Fourier analysis. A sound spectrum was obtained that encompassed broad peaks of a fundamental sound with 8-9kHz frequency and of its overtones.
(2) Upon giving continuous sonic and ultrasonic waves generated from a speaker connected with a function generator, Bacillus carboniphilus cells responded to the sounds with about 9kHz frequency and its overtones with enhanced growth.
(3) The growth of Escherichia cole cells were repressed by the sounds with frequencies lower than several hundred Hz.
(4) Not only living cells, but natural materials such as woods, cork, soil, sand, minerals and some sorts of solid metals also promoted the growth of Bacillus carboniphilus and related bacteria.
(5) Mutants altered in the capability of sonic signal response were isolated from Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Bacillus carboniphilus and their properties were investigated.
(6) Hatching of developing medaka (fish) eggs were activated or repressed under signaling effect of cells of bacteria and yeast, graphite or sounds from a speaker.
