Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to clear the colonization process by Japanese immigrants in Korea and the characteristics of Korean colonial society, from the view point of Japanese migration and settlement pattern in Korea. In this article, the author explains why did Japanese immigrants decide to move and thier perceptions about korea. The conclusion derived from an analysis about Japanese fishermen emigrated from Setouchi region is as follows ; (1) Most Japanese immigrants to Korea moved from the western part of Japan. Generally, their economic levels were very low and they selected different places to live depending on their regional and blood relationship. (2) Many Japanese immigrants, who resided in the Japanese settlement, worked as many kinds of merchants and laborers. In the colonial period, industrial workers and colonial government officials increased. (3) As Japanese immigrants were very vulgar, Korean people looked down on them. In Korean domestic markets. Japanese merchants could not compete with Chinese merchants. So they tended to rely upon Japanese imperial policy. (4) In the early period of Japanese colonization, it was very difficult for Japanese immigrants to get rich life, though, a few people could make success by their overpowered trade and excessive fishing. (5) In the society of Japanese settlement, new kinds of businesses increased and an infrastructure was founded by Japanese colonial government. It showed colonial settlement got many similar characteristics of Japanese society. Japanization of colonial settlement meant modernization of society. Therefore Japanese immigrants often held sence of superiority for Korean. (6) In the case of successful migration and settlement, immigrant readers often took advantage of imperial policy. It aggravated Japanese discrimination against korean.
