Research Abstract

Primary decomposition processes in liquid alkanes were studied by the nanosecond and picosecond pulse radiolysis. Following results were concluded.
1) A New picosecond pulse radiolysis for the absorption spectroscopy was developed. A picosecond electron pulse from the linear accelarator was used as the irradiation source, and femtosecond laser was used as the analyzing light. Both electron and laser pulse were synchronized by using the same radio frequency. The observable wavelength was very wide covered from 250 nm to 2000 nm.
2) In order to elucidate the primary decompostion processes of liquid alkanes, the dynamics of cation radicals and electron produced by high energy radiation, so called geminate ion recombination, was investigated. Especially, the reactivates of the cation radicals and the electrons with solutes which depressed the decomposition were tested. The dynamics was analyzed by the theoretical Smoluchowski equation based on the diffusion theory. The rate constants were determined.
3) The whole mechanism of the decomposition processes was studied based on the experimental results obtained in the nanosecond and picosecond pulse radiolysis. It was concluded that the cation radicals and electrons playd an important role in the primary processes.
