Research Abstract

1)All the participants carried out the statistical survey of the Bon colonies/settlements, Bon monasteries and the religious practice of Bon. An extensive survey was done all over West China, India and Nepal. Many unknown aspects of Bon people and practice were revealed for the first time. The results are compiled and edited by Nagano and Tsering Thar.
2)A comparative sutdy of Bon and Buddhism (Dzogchen, above all) was done by Mimaki and Samten Karmay, who successfully combined the results of their fieldwork in China and those of their philological research in Paris and Osaka.
3)Tachikawa, Mori, Onoda, Yamaguchi, Masaki and Per Kvaeme carried out their field survey of iconography and rituals in India, Nepal and Tibet (China). As the result of this, we have a concrete perspective of obtaining a set of the Bon mandalas .
4)Life rituals, Possession and the social structure of Bon people were studied by Ishii and S.Nagano, in Nepal and China.
5)As for the Bon manuscripts and canons, Tsering Th … More ar, Dan Martin and Miyake did an extensive survey of them mainly in Tibet (China) and made an analysis. As the result, we have got complete sets of Kangyur and Tangyur. This will make a solid foundation of Bon studies in Japan.
6)In linguistics field, Takeuchi and Takahashi did fieldwork on West Himalayish languages in Uttar Pradesh, India, while
Nagano did it on Gyarong in Sichuan, China. The both are colosely related to Zhangzhung language, which older Bonpo people are considered to have spoken. In connection to the latter, Nagano and Takeuchi researched the Dunhoung manuscripts held at the British Library in London and at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris. Kitamura and Nishi studied the socio-linguistic aspects of Bon people in China.
Four participants from abroad were invited to Osaka to review and edit the results of the others and computerized their materials so that every participant can utilize other members' fruits. We also discussed how to publicize the results of the symposium in the summer of 1999 as well as our future project. Less
