火星起源隕石の岩石学的・地球化学的手法による火星の起源と進化に関する研究

Research Abstract

南極産火星隕石ALH84001から生命の痕跡らしきものが存在するとNASAが発表したことから、火星隕石に注目が集まり、多方面からの研究が進められている。火星にかつて生命が存在したかどうかは否定的な状況にあるものの研究者の関心は大いに高まっている。しかし、研究に使用する火星隕石は限られ、入手がきわめて困難である。私は火星隕石を発見した立場から、12個の火星隕石のうち11個について研究を実施している(残り1個についても近々入手の予定)。継続実施している火星隕石の岩石・岩石化学的研究から火星隕石は次の5つに分類される。
1.ダンカンラン岩:Chassigny
2.レルゾライト:ALH-77005、LEW88516、Yamato-793605
3.単斜輝石岩:Nakhla、Lafayette
4.斜方輝石岩:ALH84001
5.玄武岩:Shergotty、Zagami、EETA79001、QUE94201
Governador Valadares隕石は斜方輝石岩に区分されると言われるが未入手である。他の11個については5つの岩石タイプに分類されるが、同一のタイプに分類されるものでも、岩相・鉱物の量比、全岩化学組成等に差異があり、本来はそれぞれ個別の個体として落下したことを示している。さらに各隕石の鉱物には特徴的な組成変化が認められる場合があり、火星の進化の点から注目し研究を進めている。
