Research Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find the optimized battery of cognitive-behavioral interventions for modifying interpersonal anxieties. A new scale to measure one's distorted/irrational thinking of the students with interpersonal anxiety was developed, and named DITS-SA.In two experiments, university students with moderate interpersonal anxiety were asked to engage pre-and post-structured interview sessions and training sessions. The anxiety reducing effects (measured by physiological indices, behavioral observation, subjective ratings) of the two types of training (systematic desensitization with relaxation training vs.cognitive restructuring) were compared. As expected, subjective anxieties of the cognitive reactors (high in DITS-SA) were well reduced through cognitive interventions. Any significant differences were not observed on physiological and behavioral indices.
