Research Abstract	棒などの道具を使って遠くのものをとるときには、道具は物理的/機能的に手の延長となり、注意の向けられる先は自分の指先から棒の先端へとシフトする。したがって、道具使用時には、道具が自己の体に機能的に同化して、自己および自己をとりまく空間構造の認識、自己意識・身体図式が変化するものと想定される。本研究では、ニホンザルを熊手状の道具を使って手のとどかない遠くの餌をとるように訓練し、サルがこの行動を行っているときに、大脳皮質中心後回後部の体性感覚野とその後方に隣接する頭頂連合野から単一ニューロン活動を慢性的に記録し、以下の結果を得た。1)この領域には、体性感覚受容野の周囲の空間の視覚刺激にも応答し、体性感覚と視覚を統合して、身体図式あるいは空間内における自己の身体の視覚的イメージをコードするニューロンが存在する。2)手/前腕に体性感覚受容野のあるニューロンでは、素手のときには手/前腕の周囲の空間にあった視覚受容野が、道具使用時には道具に沿って延長した。3)顔/肩/上腕に体性感覚受容野のあるニューロンでは、素手のときには手の届く範囲の空間に対応していた視覚受容野が、道具使用時にはその範囲が道具の到達範囲の空間に拡張した。4)これらの変化は、サルが道具を持ってそれを使用しようとする意図に関連してひきおこされた。これらの結果は、道具使用時には身体図式が変化して道具が手に同化するという心理学的経験に対応する神経生理学的現象であると解釈される。
