X線輝線の精密分光撮像に基づく天の川銀河中心・銀河面の拡散X線放射の起源解明

Research Abstract

我々の太陽系が含まれている天の川銀河の中心領域(以後、銀河中心領域)は多数の天体群が密集する高エネルギー現象の宝庫である。近年のX線観測から銀河中心領域の分子雲から強い中性鉄輝線(中性状態の鉄からの特性X線)が放射されていることが分かってきた。分子雲は高々100ケルビン程度の低温なので、自らX線を放射することはなく、その背後に高エネルギー現象が存在することを示唆する。これまでに私を含め、様々な観測結果から中性鉄輝線を放射するためには、外部からの強いX線によって分子雲が照射され、内部の鉄原子を電離していると考えられている。しかし、これまでに照射天体を決定的に示す観測的証拠は得られていなかった。そこで、私はX線天文衛星「すざく」を用いて、銀河中心の射手座B2領域の観測を行った。2005年の観測データと比較し、2つの分子雲からの中性鉄輝線と連続X線の強度が4年間で相関して減少していることを明らかにした。この観測結果から分子雲を照らすX線照射天体候補は太陽程度の質量の天体では不可能な光度を持っている必要があることを解明し、唯一の候補が太陽の400万倍の質量を持つ銀河中心ブラックホールであることを明らかにした。銀河中心ブラックホールは数100年前に少なくとも100万倍以上の活動性であったことが分かったのである。さらに、私が前年度までにも明らかにしたように銀河中心領域にはこの他にもX線を放射する分子雲が多数存在している。これらのX線放射の起源も巨大ブラックホールの過去のX線フレアである可能性を初めて示した。
