Research Abstract

For a batter understanding of the diversity and differentiation of the flora in the limestone areas of the Sino-Japanese floristic region, field expeditions were made in the southwestern China and also Taiwan and Myanma. Through the expeditions more than 3000 herbarium specimens were prepared. The samples for molecular phylogenetic studies and the study of chromosome numbers were also obtained. Specimens were brought back to Japan and examined together with those gathered through previous activities. Dulicate specimens were studied in the Kunming Institute of Botany, China, by the Chinese counterpart. As the results, specimens obtained from the limestone areas during 1995 and 96 were identified and complied into a list. Two new species of Arisaema from China and one new species of Typhonioum from Myanmar were found. Many other new species were recoginizxed and will be described soon. Population analysis based on the allozyme polymorphism and molecular phylogenetic analysis were made on (Hepaticae), Magnoliaceae, Pedicularis, Araceae, Thymelaeaceae, Lobelia, Aucuba, Aristolochia and Stachyurus. Although the limestone areas extend widely and rather continuously, it is evident that the plants are locally differentiated.
