Research Abstract

English Culture : Its Dynamics and Policies' (SAITO Yoshifumi)
English culture has spread itself basically through the colonization of Britain and the political and economical dominance of the United States after the World War II. However, when we take a closer look at the culture, its formation and development vary according to the extent to which English is used. Furthermore, the English culture of each country is ever-changing. Such being the case, its future, probably moving toward verification, is completely unpredictable and Japanese people should be keenly alert to its movements.
Language, Culture and History : On the Formation of Narrative' (HAYASHI Fumiyo)
One of the greatest contributions of post-structuralist criticism is, as we can see in the works by Said and Spivak, the unveiling of the fictionality, narrativity, or ideologies behind descriptions of language, culture and history, which have been assumed to be objective facts. From the point of view of this new approach, we will and the idea of the 'world', to which we are supposed to be able to gain access through English, rather ambiguous and unsteady. We should take a renewed look at the idea of stipulating English as our second common language from this new perspective.
