Research Abstract

The OH-airglow suppressor, one of the first generation instruments of Subaru telescope, and its camera section (CISCO) have been developed for these two years. In particular, the Zenger prism which was installed in the filter wheel of CISCO and used for the slitless multi-object spectroscopy mode was manufactured, and then, tested its performance through the test observation in Japan. The summary of the test results for this new-concept observing procedure are as follows.
The hydrogen emission line of a distant quasar was detected successfully by the slitless multiobject spectroscopy mode of CISCO mounted on the IR simulator telescope in Mitaka. The performance of this observing mode was demonstrated by using real obtained image.
The spatial resolution of the Subaru telescope is very important for this observing mode, because the image size affects the spectral resolution directory. We could confirm the amazing performance of the telescope (the minimum image size of 0.2 arcsec despite th … More e imperfection of the telescope), indicating more superior performance of the slitless multi-object spectroscopy mode than we expected.
The total efficiency of this observing mode (including the quantum efficiency of the detector) is about 30%. This is significantly high value comparing with the other infrared spectrograph which usually have very complicated optical design. The expected limiting magnitude of this observing mode is 21mag (lambda=2.1mum, S/N=5) from the results of these test observations.
The scheduled observing targets during the engineering term up to this summer are the surrounding areas of several radio galaxies such as B3 0731*438 and B3 0939*381, and the selected blank fields such as Subaru Deep Fields. The distant cluster of forming galaxies will be surveyed by detecting the high-redshifted hydrogen emission lines. New high-redshift clusters which could not identified by usual multi-color detection technique will be discovered through these observations, and the galaxy forming process in the distant universe will be investigated by the new-concept observing technique of "infrared slitless multi-object spectroscopy".
