Research Abstract

To examine the involvement of neuroendocrine systems m immunosuppression produced by low level microwaves in pregnant rats, we assayed some blood indicators and beta -endorphin (beta EP), pituitary lobes and placenta as well as splenic NKCA in virgin and/or pregnant rats exposed to microwaves (2 mW/cm^2 incident power density at 2450 MHz for 90 mm). Although microwaves elevated colonic temperatures by 0.8 ゚C for virgin and 0.9 ゚C for pregnant rats, and blood prolactin (PRL), and beta EP in blood and anterior pituitary lobes (AP) significantly, it did not change blood corticosterone as an index of hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal axis. Intraperitoneal administration of opioid receptor antagonist naloxone prior to microwave exposure reversed reduced NKCA and CRH in the median eminence, and increased PRL in pregnant rats during microwaves. Intracerebroventricular administration of CR1-I receptor antagonist alpha -helical CRH reversed the reduced NKCA and the elevated blood PRL and pituitary beta EP.These results suggest that immunosuppression produced by microwaves during pregnancy is mediated by the central CRH-opioid system. The pituitary PRI seems likely to be involved in the immunosuppression. These alterations during pregnancy may be due to both thermal and non-thermal actions of microwaves.
