Research Abstract |
Taking a balanced diet with good rnasticatory ability is one of the important factors in promote happiness and welfare of the aged society. Reduced chewing activities would impair regulatory system including nerve, endocrine, and immunological system to maintain internal homeostasis. Our attentions have been focused on a relationship between the masticatory function and general conditions. As a series of the studies, a pilot study was carried out in patients who received dental treatments in a geriatric hospital, in an attempt to clarify the effect of denture on immune system. Eight elderly patients, who were necessary to wear full denture or partial denture to improve mastication, participated in this study (the mean age 77.0 years old). The subjects consisted of 6 patients with denture and 4 patients without denture at the first visit. Hematological, immunological (NK activity, T lymphocyte subset -CD4 and CD8 ) and biochemical analyses were made in all patients. Patients with denture, who got used to wearing were requested to remove denture for 10 days. The above analyses were performed st three points ; (A) immediately before removal ; (B) on the final day of removal ; and (C) 10 days after wearing the denture. Patients who did not wear denture for a certain period were examined at two points ; (B) immediately before wearing newly-made denture ; and (C) after wearing the denture for enough time to adjust denture. The results were compared between A and B (n-6) and B and C (n-10), respectively. For statistical analysis, paired Wilcoxons test was used (p < 0.05). In the group with denture, there was a significant decrease in CD4/CD8 ratio after removal and in the group without denture, there was a significant increase in CD4/CD8 ratio after wearing newly- made denture. Thus, the above suggests that presence of denture should influence the parameters and there should be a relationship between masticatory function and immune system.
