Research Abstract

We visited several high brilliance synchrotron radiation facilities in USA, Europe and Taiwan to see their research activities and strategies into the 21ィイD1stィエD1 century. Generally speaking, the American facilities are making efforts to develop their own activity which is different from other SR facilities. Microscopy and imaging in ALS is one of the examples. Studies of electronic states of correlated electron systems are strongly promoted in Alladin, NSLS and SSRL. In European facilities, one finds variety of activities. For example, high resolution photoemission and luminescence spectroscopy are main subjects in MAX II, whereas wide fields are covered in BESSY II.
In Japan, X-ray region is satisfactorily covered by high brilliance SR facility SPring-8. We have constructed a soft X-ray helical undulator beam line at SPring-8, which shows the far best performance between 500 and 2000eV over other SR facilities. High energy, high resolution bulk sensitive photoemission is performed by us for several strongly correlated electron systems. The results reported in Nature is stimulating wide interest in the world. This technique will make a breakthrough in photoemission spectroscopy of solids in 21ィイD1stィエD1 century.
