Research Abstract |
From the survey in 1996 significant differences in their operating times of touch-sensor system machines were observed between young people and middle-aged and elderly people. Young people took shorter time than middle-aged and elderly people did. At the survey in 1997, children and young people took significantly shorter operating time than middle-aged and elderly people did. At the mention of purchasing behavior, the survey in 1996 shows that middle-aged and elderly people made significantly more mistakes than young people did. From the survey in 1997, we confirmed that middle-aged people made significantly more mistakes than young people did, and elderly people made significantly more mistakes than children and young people did. Speaking of push-button system machines, significant differences were not observed among four age groups. Comparing touch-sensor system to push-button system, operating touch-sensor system machines needed longer time and made more mistakes especially for elder

age groups. Recently touch-sensor system Automated Teller Machine (ATM) are introduce by many banks rapidly. But the elderly and the blind in the middle life are difficult to use touch-sensor system ATM.The second experiment of this study were conducted between January 10^<th> and 13^<th> 2001. The subject were 20 university students (10 males and 10 females) and 8 weeks eyesight male adults. The subjects were asked to operate touch-sensor system ATM.We measured operating time of 6 different type of ATM. The results are as follows : In conclusion to this inquiry, causes for difficulties experienced in operating troubles and required solutions should take into consideration he fact that compared to young people, middle-aged and elderly people in particular seemed not to be accustomed to the operation of touch-sensor system machines. In particular, some people were unaw are they needed to actually touch the screen. Though young people, already familiar with using video mames and personal comruters in daily life, were accustomed to such a new system, while on the other hand, some of the middle-aged and elderly people were confused only in watching the screen or in listening to the electronic voice.
