Research Abstract |
I have clarified using new archival documents that in the late sixteenth century the Castilian king applied the servicio y montazgo tax not only to the transhumant breeders of the Plain but to the sedentary breeders to augment the revenues. The latter, to free oneself from the oppressions by local oligarchy, admitted this new situation. Now it's evident to me that the king also ignored the possesion privilege of the Assembly of the Mesta for the same purpose mentioned above. The question why many proposals by the Castilian Cortes to limit the Mesta privileges and influences were admitted by the king was made clear by me as an expedient to alleviate the complaints of ordinary peasants. I also clarified that the municipal and seignorial powers had attacked in those days the Mesta privileges.
