Research Abstract |
From 1860s to 1920 a large number of Western performing artists (including circus performers magicians, and other various talents as well as theatrical and musical artists) toured in the Asian regioas. They performed at the theaters in the colonies and foreign settlements obtained by the Western powers. The audience were mostly Western residents. However, those local people, though their number not many, who had an ardent desire to learn Western culture flocked to the theaters. The object of this projectis, firstly, to investigate the actual state of affairs and activities of touring performers, and secondly to clarify and evaluate the significance of their cultural influence over the Asian people who saw their shows. A special attention was paid to investigate the three foreign theaters in Japan -The Gaiety Theater, Yokohama, The Kobe Gymnasium Theater, The Nagasaki Public Hall and Theater- and other Western theaters built in various colonies and settlements in Asia. A detailed list of programs at those theaters has been compiled, which has helped greatly to understand the activities of those Western touring artists in Asia. Last summer I visited the National Library of Australia, and found a number of their playbills and programs which were not known to have existed anywhere.
