Research Abstract |
In order to evaluate the vibration characteristics of the maxillary arch, modal analysis was applied to human subjects. 12 healthy human subjects and 2 CLP subjects with surgical failure at their cleft area were chosen in this study. The main measurement system was composed of an impact hammer, acceleration sensor, CF-6400 FFT Analyzer, PC-982IXn personal computer, and Vibrant PC modal analysis software. The measurement points were established on 12 teeth in healthy subjects and 10 teeth in CLP subjects between the first molars of each side. In all subjects, one distinct resonance peak were observed in every transfer function at each measurement point and the transfer function had a strong resemblance in its shape to other transfer functions in the same subject. The amplitude and modal shapes of maxillary arch of all subjects were obtained with using curve-fitting function in the software. In the healthy subjects, the maxillary arch expanded outward and shrank inward on vibration with no node after an impact. In the CLP subjects, the phase lag between the large and small segment was observed distinctly after an impact. From this study, the applicability of modal analysis to human subjects was demonstrated.
