Research Abstract

Electrooculogram (EOG) is applied to clinical diagnosis in the ophthalmology field, but it is very difficult to measure the absolute values of the standing potentials around the eye because of changes in various factors such as the pasting positions of electrodes, the kinds of electrodes and the subjects. Therefore, the changes in the standing potentials caused by eye movements are measured in clinical tests instead of measuring the absolute values of the standing potentials.
We have already reported that the changes in the standing potentials could be analyzed by applying a battery model to the eyeball. In this study, the various characteristics of EOG was measured and simulated applying the battery model to the eyeball. The battery model of the eyeball were found to be in good agreement with the experimental results for the difference in the pasting positions of electrodes.
In this report, the EOG characteristics in case of the deviation of the eye line from frontal to right or left was analyzed applying the battery model. And the cross-talk, the contralateral potential was simulated using this model.
It was simulated from the battery model that the potentials on the corneal apex had the maximum values. We tried to measure the absolute values of standing potentials to confirm the above analysis. The maximum value of the potential was experimentally measured from the electrode pasted on the closed eyelid.
Measuring the absolute values of the standing potentials and applying the battery model to the eyeball enable us to analyze the detailed characteristics of EOG.
