Research Abstract

To examine the tolerance to night work and effects of nighttime nap on psycho-physiological functions between morningness (M-types) and eveningness (E-types) subjects, we carried out experimental studies under the simulated schedule. Eight moderate eveningness and 5 moderate morningness subjects participated in this study. Experimental periods were simulated shift schedule of consecutive 9 days consist of 2 day duty (work 8 : 00-16 : 00), 3 night duty (work 22 : 00-8 : 00) and 3 day duty. They carried out the experiments schedule twice, That is, subjects take a nap or without a nap for 2 h (from 2 : 00 to 4 : 00) every night. Subjects conducted measuring oral temperature, collecting saliva, filling out question sheets, and other inspections such as critical flicker fusion frequency and 3-choise reaction time during break between each tasks. Heart rate variability was recorded throughout studies to evaluate autonomic nerve activities. In M-types, the fall of task performances and increasing subjective feeling of fatigue during night duty without nap condition were significantly suppressed by the nap on the first night duty. Moreover, HF value between 4 : 00 and 6 : 00 significantly decreaed by nap in M-types. These results suggested that nighttime nap in M-types are thought to be more effective than that in E-types.
