Research Abstract |
The Short Treatise on God, Man and His Well-being (hereafter Short Treatise) of Spinoza is famous of its special difficulty in reading of the text. I have done philological research on it through reading of its text with reference to codices the microfilms of which we got and also through comparing various editions. I have been engaged in the translation of this work for several years. Coincided with this translation work and with analytical reading of it, I have carried philosophical investigations into the relation of this work to the Ethics and to Treatise on the improvement of Understanding (hereafter TIE) depended on basic works of the understanding of historiography and of the review of main interpretations. And from a view of the making of Spinoza's early philosophy, I have tried to investigate historically into the facts, circumstances, the period of writing this work and its original form (in which language? And by dictation or not). Consequently I could get mainly the followi

ng results. 1. Through attention to what sort of work the Short Treatise had been accepted as, I think, I could clarify to some extent some particular circumstances attached to this work, including the relation with the Ethics as completed form. 2. Recent tendencies of Spinozistic studies have come to attach great importance to his early philosophy. There lies a crucial problem about the chronological order between TIE and Short Treatise. However, historical approach to this problem cannot be separated from insights into philosophies lying in them. This has become concretely clear to me through tracing his philosophy on truth I have been mainly engaged in the latter half of the term of this project. In particular, I have come to an idea that the incomplete TIE (together with why it was remained incomplete) has so much significance in his making of own philosophy. 3. To speak incidentally, on grant-in-aid in terms of this project, I could make research trip in the Netherlands and Italy and have my research project reviewed by leading scholars in history of ideas and historico-philological study respectively. It was, of course, of great significance in widening my vision of study. Less
