Research Abstract |
The effect of psychological stress and physical stress on salivary chromogranin A and salivary immunoglobulin A (sIgA) concentrations was studied in University athletes. A total of 12 males (19.1±1.1years old), who completed the continuous high-intensity running between 6 days as physical stress and the 20km half-marathon race as psychosomatic stress, were studied. Saliva samples were collected one day before and after the hard training, also were done 2 days before and one day after the race, to measure the levels of salivary chromogranin A and sIgA.At the same time, each subject completed a profile of mood state questionnaire (POMS), designed the measure six mood factors ; tension, depression, anger, vigor, fatigue, and confusion. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The concentration of salivary chromogranin A indicated a low level two days before the race and increased one day after the race. 2. A strong negative correlation was observed between the change in concentration of salivary chromogranin A and the vigor score one day after the race (p<0.05). On the other hand, the level of salivary chromogranin A showed no change before and after hard training as physical stress. 3. A strong positive correlation was observed between the change in concentration of salivary sIgA and the vigor score after the hard training (p<0.05). 4. These results suggest that salivary chromogranin A elevated distinctively in response to not physical stressor but psychosomatic stressor and thus the level is considered to be a sensitive index for psychosomatic stressor.
