Research Abstract |
Endurance ability of distance runners has been evaluated by maximum oxygen uptake. However, this relationship is not established in elite distance runners. We investigated characteristics of RBC indexes with endurance training to clarify this background. First, we found contradiction between RBC and performance ; longitudinal study on RBC indexes of distance runners for 4 years indicated significant decrease of RBC and blood viscosity with endurance training. From viewpoint of oxygen uptake, decrease of RBC with endurance training is a negative factor, but improvement of their performances occurred. In the background, compensatory increases of MCV and MCH significantly occurred at the time. We estimated relationship between RBC membrane and plasma lipids, because there are many phospholipids in plasma HDL which are composed of cell membrane. There were significan relationships between plasma HDL and MCV.However, a half of the distance runners did not show such relationship. Since there

is a significan relationship between RBC membrane and plasma PCs via LCAT activity, we investigated relationship between plasma PC and plasma HDL.The relationship between them was not linear. The plasma PC in significant relationship group between MCV and plasma HDL was significantly higher that those in no-significant group. Then, amount of plasma PC directly influenced on establishment of the relationship between MCV and plasma HDL.From these results, the compensatory increase of MCV with endurance training was supported with amount of plasma PC and meant increase of RBC membrane PC ; increase of membrane fluidity and RBC adaptability. The mechanism on increase of MCV was studied by exhaustive exercise, addition catecholamine and mechanical stimulation. From these results, increase of the RBC membrane PC were obtained. Increase of RBC membrane PC suggests that decrease of Ch/PC ratio in RBC membrane enhances membrane fluidity and adaptability of RBC.In this sense, we demonstrated the exercise or training was essential for RBC itself to maintain the better structure and function.
