Research Abstract

To cope with the global warming while keeping or even developing the present life style, it is necessary to develop an novel energy system witch has a high thermal efficiency and produces less carbon dioxide. Although the energy density is quite low, the solar energy is recognized to have a good potential as such clean, environmentally friendly energy resource. This project focuses on a high temperature, high thermal efficiency gas turbine system using hydrogen, that is produced by solar energy, as its fuel. Much attention has been paid to the turbine blade cooling and hydrogen combustion technologies as the key factors in developing such system. Researchers from both Japan and foreign countries visited each other, had meeting on particular research topics, such as hydrogen combustion, turbine blade cooling, thermal energy recovery by regenerator or recuperator, possibility of hybrid system with Solid Oxide Fuel Cell and MEMS application in a gas turbine system, and exchanged ideas on the next generation clean energy systems with this aid. Although the details of each visit, research meeting and conference are not described here, four journal papers were published and 14 presentations were made in international conferences as the visible results of this project. Another and perhaps more valuable results of this project, in a sense, is that this project gave opportunities to the researchers to develop and strengthen personal connections among the researchers in this field, which will, in the near future, be continued to make further development to realize this next generation hydrogen gas turbine system.
