Research Abstract |
The aim of this research is to develop a new evaluation method for shared use of bicycles and pedestrians from a view point of their comfort, and to propose the level-of-service of sidewalks with shared use of bicycles and pedestrians which are mainly adopted in Japan. Results from this research are as follows, 1) Risk-perception model for mixed traffic (2000-2001) : The risk perception model was developed through off-road experiments, which can estimate the risk perceptions in the conflicts of bicycles and pedestrians, by using their relative position and speed. 2) Evaluation of shared use traffic (2001-2002) : By employing this model, the evaluation index for mixed traffic using video survey was proposed. The index presents the predicted frequency of near-miss between cyclists and pedestrians and between cyclists. 3) Level-of-service system (2001-2002) : A new level-of-service system for shared use of bicycles and pedestrians by employing near-miss prediction model, is also proposed. It can be clarified that the index shows clear relationship to traffic density, bicycle speed, level of safety sense of road users. 4) Evaluation of bicycle lanes on shared use sidewalks (2002) : The proposed level-of-service system are applied to evaluation of four cycle lane projects on shared use sidewalks and a shopping street. Colored cycle lane shows effects on separation of pedestrians and bicycles and improvement of level-of-service.
