Research Abstract |
The detection capability of laser radars strongly depends on the output of a laser and the performance of an optical antenna. The radiation pattern of the laser should be uniform without dark spots as much as possible. It was experimentally shown that the characteristics of the laser radar is significantly degraded due to the deterioration of the patterns, if a conventional high power laser of W-class is applied to wireless uses. The design method was derived to smooth the radiation pattern of a broad area laser which is most promising for these applications. It is contrived to shape a sub-reflector and a lens in the feed system of a high-performance optical antenna as the reflector shaping method which is most tolerant to manufacturing errors. The validity was shown through simulation. Strong illuminating and receiving lights are obtained by spatially superimposing the output powers from plural lasers. And it is possible to restrict the speckle effect which is significant in a single mode laser. This fact was confirmed experimentally.
