Research Abstract |
Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) are produced by the non-enzymatic reduction of amino-acids (Mallard reaction, late stage).lt is well known that the production of AGEs are remarkably increased in the patients with long-standing renal failure under the control of hemodialysis. We suspect the renal osteodystrophy in long-term hemodialysis cases may have some relationship with increased production of AGEs. Therefore, we made the hypothesis that the over-expression of the receptor for AGEs (RAGE) may occur in both parathyroid glands and bone tissue. This research project was performed as follows with two steps researches. First, we examined the expression of AGEs in parathyroid glands and bone tissues. AGEs expression was immunohistochemically examined in normal parathyroids (nPTG), secondary parathyroid hyperplasia (HPT), parathyroid adenoma (PTA). As a result, AGEs were expressed all examined parathyroid tissues in both normal and pathologic cases. There was a strong AGEs expression in the area of oxyphil cells. Because oxyphil cells in parathyroids are shown tobe less active cells both in hormone production and cell proliferation, AGEs expression of parathyroid glands also related to the cell aging. However, there was no RAGE expression in parathyroid glands. Second, Rage expression was examined in Ilug tissues as control study. Rage was diffusely expressed in type I pneumoctes. It is of great interest that the tumor cell in adenomatous lesion was positive contrasted to the nagative reaction of tumor cells in the very well differentiated adenocarcinoma in the lung neoplasms.
