Research Abstract |
In recent years in Japan, a growing number of museums have accepted volunteer activities. The stage of volunteer jobs are now reaching almost all of the field of museum activities. According to the questionnaire and/or inquiry to the natural history museums where the volunteers are actually working, most of the voluntary workers request jobs in the fields of the exhibition works and curatorial works, since in such field, they have many opportunities to come in contact with the museum's collection. In contrast, cultural museums and art museums tend to hesitate to receive volunteers in such fields. Thus, the fact-finding inquiry for metropolitan/prefectural museums all over Japan by the questionnaire was carried out to investigate the actual circumstances of volunteer acceptance. The result suggests that ; 1) more than a half of themuseums are already accepted the volunteer activities, and if museums while considering are included, it will exceed 72 percent : 2) the volunteers work in almost all of the field of museum jobs, especially the most active fields are, in order, explanation of exhibitions, assistance in lectures and experiments, and guidances for visitors.
