Research Abstract |
PHYTOPLANKTON HAS A CERTAIN ACCESSORY PIGMENT IN EACH SPECIES WHEREAS THERE ARE MANY PIGMENTS IN ITS CELL. THESE PIGMENTS ARE OBSERVED QUANTITATIVELY BY THE HIGH PERFORMANCE LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY (HPLC). IN THE PRESENT STUDY, WE OBSERVED SEASONAL CHANGES IN COCCOLITHOPHORES IN THE OYASHIO AREA TO UNDERSTAND SEASONAL CHANGE IN PHYTOPLANKTON BEING ESTIMATED BY USING HPLC IN THE SUBARCTIC PACIFIC. 28 COCCOLITHOPHORE SPECIES WERE OBSERVED IN THE OYASHIO WATER AMONG COCCOLITHOPHORES, EMILIANIA HUXLEYI V. HUXLEYI (51.6%), CALICOPAPPUS RIGIDUS (6.2%), AND ZYGOSPHAER AMOENE (5.2%) WERE ABUNDANT THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. CONCENTRATION OF COCCOLITHOPHORES AND THE BIOMASS CENTER OF THE DEPTH WAS INCREASED WITH SEASON STARTED FROM SPRING. MAXIMUM ABUNDANCE WAS OBSERVED IN AUGUST AT 30 M DEPTH WHERE WATER TEMPERATURE WAS 10℃ WITH 32.8 PSU. THE ABUNDANCE BECAME LOW FROM OCTOBER. THESE RESULTS REVEAL THAT CONCENTRATION OF COCCOLITHOPHORES WAS RELATED WITH THE WATER. HPLC ANALYSIS WAS RECENTLY COMPLETED. WE WILL OBSERVE THE RELATION BETWEEN ABUNDANCE OF COCCOLITHOPHORES AND EACH PIGMENT CONCENTRATION.
