Research Abstract |
Objective : The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between bio-psychological and spiritual aspects of dysfunctions observed in substance abusers. Methods : We evaluated characteristics of 51 substance abusers residing in DARC(Drug Addiction Rehabilitation Center), a long term residential facility specialized for abusers in Japan. To evaluate, we used following measures, MRI, WCST, VFT and BVRT for biological aspects ; PANSS and POMS (Profile of Mood States) for psychiatric/psychological aspects; PIL(Purpose in Life Test) for spiritual aspects ; ASI and SDS(Severity of Dependence Scale) for addiction-related problems. Results and Conclusions^ The subjects with long history of organic solvent abuse generally showed poor cognitive performance. Among them, however, the subjects with longer abstinence period showed higher cognitive performance and lower PIL scores. The results suggest that, with recovery of cognitive functions, some abusers may become conscious of their 'powerlessness' which could lead to a weakening of spirituality.
