| Research Abstract |
This study aims at illuminating the factors that affect the processes of development of delinquency among today's Japanese youth, using a design that combines a case-control questionnaire survey and longitudinal follow-ups with official records.
Based on the literature review conducted in the fiscal year of 2000, a survey of second grade public junior high school students and juvenile delinquents in the same school grade was carried out, using an identical questionnaire in 2001. The delinquency careers of the delinquents were examined based on the police records during the years of 2002-2003. The study site is Osaka prefecture and subjects for final analyses were 289 juvenile delinquents and 2,046 public junior high school students

aviors before entering junior high schools and poor academic performance in junior high schools, low commitment to school rules and school events, high impulsivity/aggressiveness/thrill-seeking tendency/rebelliousness and low perceived selfefficacy, whereas the protective factors include: strict attitudes of parents against problem behaviors, solicitation to conventional activities by peers, friendly relationships with neighbors and community-based. activities for healthy development of youth.
The analyses on delinquency careers indicated that approximately 40% of the delinquent subjects had official delinquency records other than the current one; those with official records prior to the current one were approximately 25%, whereas those with official records after the current one were also approximately 25%, with the rate for males (27%) being higher than for females (17%); factors such as academic achievement, educational aspiration, and peer relationship had relatively strong influence on repeated delinquency.
