Research Abstract |
In this tenure, we studied mostly conceptual issues of quantum measurement, reality of quantum state and metrological advantage of weak measurement. The main areas of our investigation involve counterfactual paradoxes and weak measurement, psi-epistemic theories and noise induced quantum metrology. In particular, we studied the three-box paradox and the Chesire cat paradox and their solution using the technique of pre- and post-selection and weak measurement. We proposed a gadanken experiment to test such paradoxes using spin-1 atoms. We investigated whether the weak measurement and post-selection strategy provides better accuracy in estimating a small parameter than the standard technique. For this, we used the initial probe as mixed states where the mixedness is controlled by the temperature of the initial preparation characterized by the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. We also derived joint weak values of two commuting idempotent observables for any order of coupling beyond the standard formalism of weak measurement, and found some interesting results, for instance, that a single pointer can provide the joint weak value which cannot be obtained for first or second order coupling. We also studied the recent ontic-epistemic debate.
