Research Abstract	本総括班は本特定領域研究の目的を厳正かつ遅滞なく達成するために組織された。本特定領域研究を円滑に推進するために、各研究項目間におよぶ班員間の共同研究、国際情報ネットワークの構築、若手研究者の支援、また、遺伝子操作動物の作成、管理の支援、などを行っている。昨年に引き続き、総括班会議、合同班会議、企画実施委員会を開催し、班および班員間の交流、共同研究の推進、国の内外における広汎な情報交換、さらには、感染症・宿主応答研究の推進に適切な提言と研究基盤の形成に必要な措置を取った。また、総括班においては上部委員会として評価委員会を設置し、本特定領域の評価、並びに研究の推進に対して貴重な提言をいただいた。本年度の特筆するべき総括班の活動としては、世界的な問題となったSARSについて、本特定領域が共催する国際シンポジウム「第3回あわじしま感染症・免疫フォーラム」(平成15年8月開催)においてSARSウイルスの発見者であるDr.Osterhousの特別講演を企画・実施した。また、社会貢献の立場から主要なメディア各社を対象としてSARSに関するパネルディスカッションを行った。Dr.A.Osterhaus、永井美之(領域代表)、河岡義裕(計画研究)、さらに、ウイルス学研究者のDr.M.J.Buchmeier、Dr.H.Feldman、及びWHO西太平洋事務局SARS対策特別チームリーダーの押谷仁博士をパネラーに依頼し、SARS問題について幅広い議論を展開した。パネルディスカッションについては各種新聞等で取り上げられ、また、その詳細はメディカルレビュー社季刊誌『インフルエンザ』2004年4月号に掲載される予定である。
