Research Abstract |
This research project aims to understand 1)the emplacement mechanism of the Taitao ophiolite located nearby the Chile triple junction to clarify its origin and petrochemical characteristics of source material that caused the arc magmatism, 2)the spatial-temporal evolution of magmatisms that supposedly related to the subduction of the young and hot Chile ridge, and 3)the deep structures underneath the ridge subduction zone through seismic study. The main contributions of this research project are as follows. 1)We collected 5 tons of samples of post-Miocene igneous rocks systematically from Patagonia and established the best library for the rock samples. 2)Emplacement mechanism of the Taitao ophiolite was understood by paleomagnetic means. The plutonic section of the ohiolite must be originated nearby the mid-axis of the Chile reidge, and them obducted to the South American fore-arc. 3)The rocks of the Taitao ophiolite were confirmed to have both N-MORB and E-MORB compositions, and too a

ccompany simultaneous granite intrusions with arc signatures. The patterns of ocean floor metamorphism along the mid-oceanic ridge section was preliminary estimated. 4)First geological maps were made for Hudson and Lautaro volcanoes, located both end Of the Patagonian volcanic gap. Systematic K-Ar dating was performed too clarify the duration of the volcanic activities. 5)Radiometric ages and petrochemical characteristics were established for adakites from the Austral Volcanic zone, together with those from Cerro Pampa and Puesto Nuevo. New genetic model for adakite were suggested. 6)radiometric ages and petrochemical investigation were done on the rocks of Somuncura, an extra-baxkarc volcanic field. Genetic models for the extra backarc volcanism were suggested. 7)Miocene granites were recognized to distributed in two (or probably three) lines that parallel the Chile trench axis. We preliminary carried petrochemical and geochronological studies. 8)With close collaboration with Dr.Priestley of the Bullard Institute, Cambridge University, we set a seismometer network near the Lat 46S.to understand the deep structures across the Chile ridge subduction zone. 9)Deep structures sere numerically predicted for a ridge subduction zone.
