Research Abstract

'Motion' has been an important theme for philosophers since antiquity (recall Heraclitus' theory of flux and Zeno's arguments against motion). Our study in people's motion is a continuation with this perennial inquiry from a contemporary perspective. How much do people's motions and the motions of physical objects have in common? How do they differ? What are the distinctive features of human motion in contrast to the motions of other animal species? Through consideration of these and other fundamental questions we have presented a new outlook on people's motion ; furthermore, on the basis of this new outlook, we have made suggestions as to how to solve actual problems related to social and cultural changes.
In the first of the three years we were mainly concerned to develop methodology for the philosophy of people's motion. The leader, Keiichi Noe, constructed such a methodology through theoretical consideration of 'alien world' (IKA1), i.e. borders engendered by people's moving of some sort.
In the second year we investigated into the 'spaces' that make people's motion possible. Furthermore, we held a symposium on metaphor, a cultural phenomenon representative of people's motion at the symbolic level.
In the third year our study focused on the modes of 'time' that make people's motion possible. Moreover, we, in cooperation with Tohoku Philosophical Association, held a symposium on Wilhelm Dilthey, whose 'philosophy of life' and hermeneutics are receiving attention these days. In this symposium our basic theory of cultural and social changes proved both firm and promising.
