Research Abstract |
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the change of the jaw and periodontal tissues after ovariectomy in monkeys. Methods: Forty-two cynomolgus monkeys with estimated age of 9 to 15 years were divided into two groups : a group that underwent ovariectomy (OVX group, n=2l) and a sham-operated group (SHAM group, n=21). Two years after the operation, the animals mere killed, and the maxillo-facial bones mere dissected. Each bone was examined with cepharogram, CT, micro-CT, soft X-ray, and periapical radiograph. Results: (1)In densitometric analysis of cephalogram, the OVX group showed a significant decrease in the bone mineral contents (BMCs) of the alveolar bone and the marginal bone of the mandibular angle. (2)The OVE group showed a significant decrease in CT value of mandibular condyle. (3)In the BMG of mandibular body on soft X-ray film, a significant difference was not observed between OVX and Sham groups. (4)In morphological analysis of temporomandibular joint (TMJ), a significant difference was not observed between OVX and Sham groups. (5)On periapical radiograph, a significant difference was not observed in the thickness of the lamina dura and periodontal space. (6)On micro-CT of TMJ, the OVE group showed a significant decrease in bone volume fraction, trabecular number, and trabecular thickness of the trabecular bone in the condyle and mandibular fossa.
