Research Abstract

We tried to establish the methodology which presumed the hydrodynamic force demonstrated by human hands during swimming in real-time by means of the following two experiments, a human model experiment and an experiment using actual swimmers.
Here are summery of results in the two experiments ; (l) There was a significant correlation between the representative pressure value computed from the eight pressure sensors on the metacarpophalangeal joints (II, III, IV and V) and the hydrodynamic force generated on the entire hand by the human model experiment. We confirmed, therefore, the validity of the methodology which presumed the hydrodynamic force computed from the eight points' pressure values. (2) The hydrodynamic force was obtained by substituting the representation pressure value Pv, which acts perpendicularly to the hand, for the following formula and multiplying by the hand's plane area S. Fv = S × (1.339 x Pv-116.150). (3) We concluded that this new methodology was so correct and useful comparing to the conventional method that the quick feed back to swimmers became possible. In further study, we will measure the hydrodynamic force by this method in various levels and events, and make a database for coaches and swimmers. By using the database, we would like to develop a software which can evaluate the stroke technique qualitatively even if there is no excellent coaches.
