Research Abstract |
This research project aimed at analyzing multidisciplinary structural changes in the fields of politics, economy, culture and arts under the influence of World Wars. It expanded beyond the findings made by the research project, grant-in-aid for scientific research (B) (2) "Historical Studies on Russian Politics and Culture during the Period between the World Wars" (1998-2000). In the area of cultural history, we inquired interactions between Soviet artists and writers, and the Soviet Power in the period of Terror, during World War II, and after the War. For example, KAMEYAMA Ikuo, in his article "Opera and Power Struggle," analyzed Stalin's severely critical comment on Shostakovich's opera and political climate behind this critical campaign. In the area of political history, several articles illuminated realities of Soviet political regime through the prism of the political discourse and the ideology in Post-Soviet Russia. KAMBYAMA Ikuo's monograph, Enthusiasm and Euphoria: An introduction to the Stalinogogy, was the fruits of tinterdisciplinary work. He threw light on aliness and totality in the base structure of Russian society, and thereby, illustrated interactions between political structure of the Soviet Union and the undercurrent of Russian thoughts. His book not only inquired Stalinist power apparatus and the structure of Soviet culture in the period of total-war, but also tried to develop a new approach for the study of culture and arts in totalitarian regime
