Research Abstract

Siebolt Mineral collection which is stored in the Museum of Natural History Leiden is the most important and only one systematic Japanese mineral collection in Edo-Period. However, the description of the Siebold Mineral Collection has not been carried out ever. With the cooperation of the Museum of Natural History Leiden, we made a catalogue of the collection and took the photographs of all the samples. Together with those database works, we began to analyze the Sieboldt's documents on the Japanese minerals, which belonged originally to the Japan Society in Germany. Those documents were supplied to the Japanese researchers in 1934 to promote Siebold studies in Japan. The photocopy of the documents was stored in Toyo-Bunko. We obtained the documents with courtesy of Toyo-Bunko and translated a part of "Japanese present condition of mineralogy".
The results of our studies were presented by the special exhibition with the title of "21. Century of Sieboldt Studies" and at the same time the book wit the title of "21. Century of Sieboldt" was published.
