Research Abstract |
After researching the condition of the treasured Commentary on the Saddharmapundarika in Shoinji Temple, I took some photographs of all the concerned texts bound in Japanese style, including the detailed commentary on the 28th chapter of the SaddhP. with a digital camera. And then, I was allowed to copy all of the original text. On the basis of the digital data and copies, I started on entering data into a computer. Mainly, I compiled the data on the 16th, 1st, 2nd and 25th chapters in the the SaddhP., regarded as the important. In the process of reading them I could find the fact that some commentaries by the three major treatises of the Tian tai school and so on could be seen, so I researched the importance of the literary position of the three major treatises of the T'ien t'ai school in order to investigate the idea of the Hinayana in this school, with researching the literatures quoted in them. The purpose of this research is to clear Hakuin's Buddhism on the basis of his own Commentary on the SaddhP., however, as research in this field proceeds we can find out Hakuin's paintings and calligraphic works treating the contents of the the SaddhP. and some texts of the T'ian tai school. For this reason, with researching his paintings and calligraphic works, I established a project for opening them to the public as a special exhibition at the Museum of Kyoto in cooperation with Shoinji Temple and the Eisei-bunko Museum. Moreover, in order to make a close investigation of the commentary, I had to clear Hakuin's achievements in his life. So, I visited many temples in connection with him and researched his paintings and calligraphic works. And, I visited Eigenji Temple and Kogakuji in order to ask the superintendent monk of the head temple of each sect of Rinzai Buddhism about our concern.
