| Research Abstract |
The opportunity for the present research arose in August, 1999, at the 35th International Council fort Traditional Music (LCTM) in Hiroshima, when the presenter and the fellow researchers (five scholars altogether) took part in a panel discussion on "Musical Structure and National Identity".
The presenter and the four fellow researchers, all engaged in investigating the problems related to the reception of Western music, intend to focus in the present research on the factor of national identity. We wish to establish ties among the various research methods we adopted at the time of the Hiroshima panel presentations. It has not been easy to adjust the wide range of points of view, and find the identical points of interest within the field of research we are involved in, and gear the discussion in one direction. However, during the past two years, each of us gained some understanding of the place of our individual work in the joint research, and we also realized that some new aspects of investigation exist.
This report may not provide a perfectly detailed description of our intended research, nevertheless, it emphasizes the fundamental issue, i.e. the connection between modern Japanese music and national identity.
During the past two years, we held eight conferences and discussion meetings. Especially, on the occasion of the conference in February, 2003, we profited tremendously from the discussions with four scholars, namely Uemura Yukio, Okunaka Yasuto, Hosokawa Shuuhei, Watanabe Hiroshi, and this meeting helped us to harmonize our joint research objectives.
