| Research Abstract |
The aim of this study is to investigate characteristics of the manner of experiencing one's own face in orthognathic surgical patients.
1. A group of patients with mandibular prognathism (28 males and 47 females, 21.8 years) was compared with a control group of university students without facial discrepancy (51 males 77 females, 20.8 years) on self-evaluation of facial appearance, psychosocial distress caused by it, the degree and the manner of self-acceptance, personality traits on each scale of MMPI preoperatively. Results were as follows: (1) Most of the patients had severe facial complaints, especially in females with the lower face and the facial length, (2) facial complaints showed no significant correlation with the severity of mandibular prognathism, (3) patients had difficulty in accepting themselves in a body-appearance region, (4) two different manners of representing one's own face were found, i.e., one toward negation of him/herself and the other based on objectification of him/herself, and the fact that patients tended to use the former led them to psychosocial distress or social maladjustment.
2. Twenty-five patients' Rorschach responses were examined in terms of a manner of approach. As to location, high percentage of Dd (unusual detail response) was found, many dr (rare detail) and dd (tiny detail) responses characterized patients' attitudes toward ambiguous stimuli. Arbitrary interpretation and tendency to stick to the limited perspective were found to be their manner of representing problems.
3. Patients retrospected their experiences for one year after operation as a process of becoming a person with 'ordinary' facial appearance, and it was suggested that postoperative dissatisfaction resulted from psychological disturbance immediately after operation, others' attitudes towards a change of patient and his/her way of perceiving them.
