| Research Abstract |
This research analyzed the contemporary progressing affairs concerned with land and natural resources of the pastoral societies in east Africa, with special reference to the complexity in ecological and socio-cultural domains in order to rethink the relationship between land and human activities. It is indispensable not only to clarify forms and systems of land tenure and resource use, but also to explore into everyday practice and ritual practice incorporated in a several variety of contexts of human life. In the first half of 2001, analysis based on former field research of the Chamus and Turkana (in Kenya) and the Dodoth (in Uganda) had proceeded, and then, the field research on The Dodoth for a 4-month period (2001.Oct.25-2002.Feb.20) had been conducted in Uganda. Main topics of collecting data were : (1) Nomadic pastoral life style and scattering and migration patterns for grazing, (2) the pragmatic ways in actuality of land tenure and resource use, (3) 'names of land', folk-knowledge on the land, and memories relating to the specific places, and (4) the relationship between landscape characteristics of Dodoth land and the people's recognition of space. In 2002, analysis based on the field data of preceding year had been advanced, and then the field research on The Dodoth for a 2-month and a half period (2002.Dec.12-2003.Mar.1) had conducted again. Main topics were : (1) Conflicts, alliance and negotiations on ethnic boundaries and territories, (2) ritual practice on land, territory and cattle raid, and (3) individual relationship between inter-ethnic groups.
