Research Abstract |
The aim of this study is to conduct microscopic analysis of the changes in individual/household behavior in several Asian countries that are in the process of systemic transition. Focus is on the newly emerging lower/peripheral strata, such as those who are unemployed, ruraly/urban poor, and migrant worker of rural origin. Original micro data are collected through field surveys and utilized in the entire study. The main results of this study are summarized as follows. (1)Regarding to East Asia (China), a large household survey that covers thirteen cities in six provinces has been conducted and two monographs by research principal (Hiroshi SATO) has been published in English and in Japanese. Moreover, two edited volumes (by H.SATO and Shi LI) that collected relevant papers will be published simultaneously in English and in Chinese. (2)As for West Asia-North Africa, Hiroshi KATO, Ali EL-SHAZLY, have conducted a pioneering household surveys in suburb area of Greater Cairo. Rural household survey in Lower Egypt was also conducted. The surveys have a unique merit of connecting social research with GIS. The research outcomes are to appear as journal articles and chapters of edited volume in English. (3)With regard to South Asia, a historical research on regional structure of the rural economy of Bangladesh has been conducted by Shinkichi TANIGUCHI. (4)In the process of research, not only graduate students but also undergraduate students were involved. All the participants have accumulate good experience in connecting research project wiht educational programs.
