Research Abstract |
Azo compounds have long been investigated, particularly in connection with the development of new dyes. In addition, it is well known that photoisomerization (trans 【tautomer】 cis) of azobenzene occurs by irradiation of the π-π^* and n-π^* bands with UV light. Recently, research interest has focused on the photo- and thermochromic properties of metal complexes containing azo ligands, because they are applicable to optical sensors, photo-switching devices, molecular memory storage, and so on. In this work, we report synthesis, structures, and photo and thermal reactivity of new palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes containing azo ligands. 1. Complexes containing a ligand derived from 4-aminoazobenzene and 2-(diphenyl-phosphino)benzaldehyde : Photoisomerization (cis → trans) of azo moiety occurred by irradiation with UV light (330 nm). 2. Complexes containing a ligand derived from l-phenylazo-2-naphthylamine and 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde, 2-(tert-butylthio)benzaldehyde, or 2-pyridinealdehyde : Reversible ring opening and closure reactions of the didentate ligands occurred.
