Research Abstract |
Nitrogen is a limiting factor of plant growth in many ecosystems. Efficient utilisation of nitrogen is of importance for fitness of plants. In this study I investigated nitrogen use in photosynthesis of various plant species that distribute different temperature regime along latitufdinal and/or altitudinal gratidents. Hikosaka et al. (2002) studied plants growing in different altitudes of Mount Kinabalu (4095m asl), Malaysia and found photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency (PNUE) is lower in speceis growing at higher altitudes. Yasumnura et al. (2002) studied nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of plants coexisting in a cooltemperate forest and found that coexisting species have similar NUE but the components of NUE, nitrogen productivity and mean residense time of nitrogen, were different between canopy and understorey species. Kato et al. (2002a, b, 2003) established method to study photoinhibition and photoprotection of leaves. Tsonev and Hikosaka (submitted) studied temperature dependence of photoinhibition and photoprotection in an annual Chenopodium album. Hikosaka (2003) constructed a model of leaf turnover in a leaf canopy and studied effects of difference in PNUE on structure, productivity, and nitrogen use in leaf canopy.
