Research Abstract |
Carbon cluster ions produced by field evaporation from single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs), multiwalled nanotubes (MWNTs) and vapor grown carbon fibers (VGCFs) have been analyzed by mass spectrometry. The mass spectra observed under an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) showed that the singly charged C_<29>H_n and C_<32>H_n clusters were generated as common magic clusters for all samples. The mass spectra of C_<20>+ so far reported cannot be detected in an UHV conditions.
