Research Abstract |
In the first year (2001), the actuator ability of shape memory alloy (that is, two-way shape memory effect) was investigated fundamentally in the following way. (1) The measuring system of three-dimensional movement in the two-way shape memory movement was developed. The rozet-type strain gauge was employed for the strain measurement. The temperature control system was developed to give the cyclic temperature to the shape memory alloy. (2) The two-way shape memory effect obtained by the simple loading training (the uniaxial tension and simple torsion) was experimentally investigated by \using the Cu-based shape memory alloy tube. Moreover, the micro-structural change of the material obtained by the training were observed and analyzed from the view point of two-way shape memory mechanism. (3) The two-way shape memory effect obtained by the complex loading training was experimentally investigated by applying the combined loads of axial force and torque to the thin-walled tube specimen of Cu-based shape memory alloy. In the following year (2002), the experimental data obtained in the first year were analyzed and the actuating ability of shape memory alloy was discussed, and several additional experiments were performed. In the result, the shape memory alloy was found to be quite unique and interesting material for designing the engineering actuator. These successful results were published in several international journals.
